1. Ask 2-3 neighbors and family members who they would recommend.
2. Check out the contractor's license with the CSLB.
3. Ask for references and actually go view the work performed.

Thanks for the practical tips. Yes, word of mouth really is the best way of knowing if the contractor is good. We can't just rely on pictures of work they are showing us, we should see for ourselves their work. Not to mention we should hear how they work.
